I thought a lot of the items that was listed in this article was just common sense. As a teacher, before attempting to teach anything about a culture, that I did not know much about, I would first research it prior to presenting it to my class. It would then be presented to the students in an appropriate and sensitive way. The part about offensive terms such as a papoose, I really didn't know how that was offensive. Is that not a word from their culture? Also, the part about using proper materials for Native American dress, some schools don't have the funds to purchase material to make these items and the teacher has to do the best he/she can with the resources available, I don't think that using by paper bags to explore the Native American dress is making fun of the culture.

Kim, I agree with you I don't think using paper bags would be offensive either. Sometimes we just have to use what materials are provided for usespecially if you have a large class. I do think we should research information about different cultures before we present it to the class. This way we will know what is offensive to others.

Kim, a good way to make sure that this is done accurately could be to show pictures of true Native American dress. The making of dress from paper bags can be an effective teaching tool, but if not show what true dress looks like could lead to stereotyping. Otherwise, I think it is a good idea.
