History is an fascinating subject which is always changing, but if you look in the text books the people of history are not alway portrayed correctly or some not even at all. I always wondered who makes the desicion on what is important enough to go into History books and what is not. Most history books hit on all aspects of a specific occurance but rarely give credit to the right people. Now-a-days books are having to be more politically correct with Race, gender and disablilties but within history the still tend to put more emphasis on somethings more than others. For instance we know that Women's Sufferage occurred but we never really learn about all the women involved. Also things tend to be falsified or hereoification occurs to some people in history. Like Helen Keller or Woodrow Wilson, we only here bits and pieces of their lives and usually it is the not so bad stuff. We never here that Helen Keller was a socialist, or that Wilson invaded several Latin American countries for the wrong reasons. So what are we really learning in school and should we be learning all of the truth or just the half truths. Does anyone else agree? or disagree?

A lot of the history taught in schools is about old dead white guys. You don't here much about women or people of race. History is often sugar coated with the good facts and the bad are just ignored. I think as teachers we have add to the textbooks we are given. We need to look at history as a story of the world not a story of a select few. About the only way this type of history is going to be taught is if we bring it in to our curriculum, because the textbooks are not going to.
