I have to completely disagree with this text-at least in my own educational experience. I remember being taught that these men and women were so great because they stood up to society and the powers that be. I also remember complaining to my teacher about how we got days off for Easter and Christmas, but that I would get penalized for missing class on Jewish holidays. My teacher and I discussed what I could do to bring up these issues to our Dean of Students. My teacher wasn't teaching me to rebel-he was teaching me to stand up for what I believe is right. I ended up making a report and bringing it to the Dean. The next year Jewish students were exused for Rosh Hashannah and Yom Kippur, for the first time ever. I had my teacher to thank for helping me realize that we have to make the changes ourselves, just like these great men and women of history.

I think this really shows us what we can accomplish as teachers. If we are all as open and accepting as yours was, just think of what can be achieved. This example should be taken into account as a starting point for others to deal with similar situations.
