first off...I am so sorry that you all had to leave under those circumstances. I hope the best for the husband...
in regards to the class discussion:
Parker Palmer's piece, p. 265
p. 268: "But I can practice...to reach deep for respect."
We talked about the issue of respect--its significance, but its difficulty in many circumstances--and what a powerful suggestion this is from the author.
Gayle explained these terms:
REDUCTIONISM-procedure or theory that reduces the complex to simplest terms, i.e. oversimplifying
OBJECTIVISM- asserting validity of objective phenomenon over subjective experience, i.e. assuming all people think/feel the same way
*you may want to look over this article and the contexts in which he used these terms...Palmer argues that testing is objective, meaning it doesn't take into account the subjectivity of life--personal experiences.
Behind the SAT, p. 99
SAT: first stood for Scholastic Aptitude Test (aptitude=association with IQ)
then Scholastic Assessment Test
now, according to the website, SAT stands for nothing at all
p. 99: the SAT= "a device meant to eliminate an American class system has instead helped create a new one." This explains its initial purpose to choose top students, predict their performance in Ivy League schools, and to essentially to test innate intelligence. We also noted that the SAT is still the same test. We discussed its correlation with income (lower income=lower score and vice versa) and this led to the ultimate questions again of:
What is the purpose of schooling in a democratic society?
Do these tools (i.e. testing, SAT, etc) mesh with our purpose?
We shared opinions and thoughts here...i'm sure you have your own...
And, finally, I like how Gayle ended the class with the reminder that "Education is about REAL PEOPLE and the REAL YOU".
i hope this helps you ladies...please respond with questions, etc and again, our class sends our concern...
[/u]
