When I read the North Carolina Middle School Association Research Bulletion on tracking and ability grouping, and North Carolina Dept. Public of Instruction, "Grouping Practices Research Brief" I was astonished at the benefits and disadvantages of grouping. I personally believe that everyone should be placed in the same classroom regardless of how academically gifted they might be -- if the teacher challenges everyone -- and not just that particular group, it would give the lower level kids encouragement and it gives the smart kids a chance to help the lower level kids while learning something as well. One thing that I found troubling is when the parents get involved. I was very upset to find out that parents are the ones who want there children in higher and lower level classrooms. They believe that in order to maximize their child's potential they must be placed in a classroom with only smart kids. Parents and students need to be educated about grouping. If they understood, maybe it could help everyone in the future.
