I believe that this is a very good article and points out the highlights..... well low lights of how our education system fails to respect the culture and lives of Native Americans now and in history. I remember singing the song 1 little 2 little 3 little indians... and now I realize how that is wrong. We would have never sang 1 little 2 little 3 little crackers(derogatory comment for white people), or mexicans... etc! I have a friend that is 1/4 Native American and he points out things occasionally that the schools system or the television stations broadcast occasionally that he finds offensive. Articles such as this and having him point out things is really beneficial to ensure I as a teacher do what I should.

while our educational system is nowhere near where it needs to be as far as diversity and education, I think that we can all agree that there have been strides in the right direction. For example, there are new words being taught to the song that you used as an example. We are coming out of the dawn of the "PC" era, and it is still taking time to feel itself out. In simply discussing diversity as it pertains to education, we are already preparing ourselves to be better teachers when it comes to diversity.
