Post subject:  Bullies

I was wondering about your thoughts and suggestions for dealing with bullies in the school? How will you handle this situation? Any interesting stories of how teachers have controled this problem?

The most effective means of dealing with bullies that I remember were just when the teachers and administrators made themselves as visible as possible, as often as possible. They used the same restrooms as the students (or at least monitored them), instead of the prestigious and truly mysterious faculty restrooms. They spent less time in the breakrooms and more time canvassing the halls. They walked laps around the campus and at class changes, the teachers stood out in the hallways in front of their own rooms. Their presence alone was enough to stop a potential confrontation from a bully.

In high school, my best friend was harassed by another (mean) girl, and to stop the harassment we got all of our friends together and we took turns having at least 3 of us at a time walk with her between classes. After a while the girl gave up, but I would not doubt if she just moved on to someone else.
The teachers did stand outside their classrooms, but they definitely did not go into the restrooms unless they could tell something was wrong. I think it is a problem, even more in larger schools where there are more places that need to be monitored. More does need to be done to help prevent and stop bullying in schools.

Bullies obviously have something else going on outside of school that produces all this anger. I think the bullies should see the school counselor and see what is really going on. They are not happy and they are causing others strife. The only way to stop the bullying is to get to the source of it and help him/her out!
