I was curious as to whether anyone else wanted to stand up and orally read MLK's letter. I didn't, of course, but it holds such literary power that I could actually feel the emotion through the words. I could sense his urgency of writing this response- could tell where he probably sped-up his pace in order to capture all of his noteworthy thoughts. So many kids don't understand why we celebrate MLK day. Please, as teachers, read an excerpt of this letter, or his "I have a dream" speech to your classes to help portray the earth-moving abilities of this man. Or play the speech. Students may not understand everything, but they will certainly be able to notice his verbal intonations and realize that MLK was determined to make his dream a reality.

I agree with you Natalie. I was very moved by his letter. I could see and understand exactly what he was talking about. I think everybody should read this letter, especially students. I know that it opened my eyes to many different issues.

I agree with you I think it would be a really good art lesson sorry I am oriented around art. I think playing the speech in his voice would be better for my students since I talk like a 5 year old. Any way I would have them close their eyes and imagine being surrounded by supporters of the effort and also notice the rumble of angry voices in the crowd who opposed and opressed the movement. then i would have them have them make a piece of art that expressed their emotions form hearing the speech. I don't have all the details worked out in my head except that I think it is important for them to hear his voice.
