I think the reason why less affluent kids often do not get as good of an education is because their parents are less likely to stand up to authority fiugres. Research tells us that the more educated a person the more likely they are to question authority. Usually, the more educated a person is the higher up the social class ladder they are. So, the less educated a parent is the less likely they are to confront the administration or teachers of a school when they think their child has been placed in the wrong classroom.
Some of you may have seen the video "Every Fourth Child." It discusses poverty in North Carolina. One of the ideas that it talks about is how poverty is a never ending cycle. It is a challenge for the children of poverty to rise above that level. However, they do have more of a chance of rising above their poverty level in America than in any other country. I think it is hard for us as Americans to admit that not everyone is born on the same playing level. Some of us will have more opportunities simply because of the home in which we were born. This is not to say that people who are rich are always happier...often they are the most miserable people in the world.
Overall, as teachers we must realize that a students' experiences go beyond the classroom. We never know what a child is going through when he or she gets home. Whether the student is poor, middle class or rich their home life could be very challenging. Nice clothes can often cover up a heart full of despair and frustration.

I agree. We don't know what that child might have gone through that morning or the night before. Some kids go to bed hungry or not having a bath and sometimes we take it for granted that every child has the basic essentials they need but not all do. Some kids may come to school sleepy due to the fact they had to sit up and babysit the younger brother or sister or mom had friends over and they were too loud for the child to sleep. We need to take in account that the child might or does have social or homelife problems and that is why little Johnny is asleep every day or may take another child's snack due to the fact of being hungry.

I agree we need to really know our students so this things don't slide by us, because some kids are more concerned with surviving than they are with schooling.

Kellie,
You are so right. Self-esteem gets passed down from parent to child if there is a relationship there. The same for no self-esteem.
