To my dismay i was recently informed that Physical Education has been removed from some schools and is being considered for removal from other schools. Do you agree with this step to "better" our students :?:

I think this is one of the dumbest things that the school system can do. School officials need to stop looking at test scores and focus on the children. The obesity rate is the highest it has ever been. If the children don't get physically active at school then chances are they will never get physically active. If PE is removed then it is up to the teacher. That's just one more thing the teacher has to plan.

Melissa and I are in total agreement. It angers me to see all the fun being taken out of school, replaced with intense drilling of information. Children need a break from the monotony of memorization and lectures, and the disappearance of art, PE, and music is saddening. Children are given an abudance of energy I think we all wish we had, and to coop that energy up in a classroom for 7 hours each day will drive both student and teacher crazy!

I totally agree with Melissa and Morgan. Physical education is important and should be a part of every kid's day. P.E. allows children to enjoy physical activity and allows children to become physically fit at a young age. Obesity is growing in children every day and it we continue to take P.E. out of the schools then most likely children will not learn the importance of physical activity for their bodies. Also, every child loves P.E. because its their chance to let loose, socialize, and not worry about reading a book or working a math problem. Children need a break, and P.E., besides recess, is one of their breaks. If P.E. is taken out of the schools, then teacher's jobs become that more complex and stressful because teachers would have to work physical education into the curriculum.

I can't believe it, either. I feel very sorry for those of you who will be in elementary or middle grades classrooms where the children haven't been allowed to break a serious sweat all day. I feel even worse for the kids who are trapped in flourescent-lit classes with no escape! I agree that it seems like the most idiotic thing we can do, knowing what we know about child obesity and the lack of exercise kids are getting because of video games and tv as it is. I'm not even sure how this happened. (I was one of the people in the last class who hadn't heard about it yet.) In any case, I hope it doesn't last long, for everyone's sake.

I cannot believe that the schools are taking out physical education. I definitely do not agree with this step. I think that the students need some extracurricular activities in the school. They will become frustrated if they are taught and not allowed to incorporate physical education into the curriculum. They should be allowed to play games and have fun. The school districts are treating students today like they are the product and the teachers are the factory workers. I believe that the nation should rethink this whole new curriculum. The students should be allowed to have some fun in their life.

(before reading this, please note some of what I am about to say IS sarcastic...)
There are hundreds of kids being diagnosed as hyperactive. hyperactive basically means extra active, right? If we take away the "active" part of the day, (PE) what are us teachers gonna do with all those problem kids that wont sit still and behave?

I think it is rediculous that they are taking PE out of the school day. Children need that break where they can burn off energy so they can return and pay attention in class. Teachers also need that break. For some kids, PE is the only time that they can have fun, and be active. Some kids may not get the oportunity to do afterschool activities because if they don't ride the school bus home, then they do not have another way home.

How 'bout this, Amy? As we've taken more active time away from kids, we keep finding more kids to diagnose as hyperactive. Funny how that works, huh. I think one of the worst things we could do for kids, especially elementary age, is to take away the few moments for free kinesthetic expression and release that they have. It's going to lead to problems in the present and in the future.

I think that its horrible that PE is being taken out of school. That is the only physical activity that some children do. With more children playing video games and watching tv after school, children need exercise to stay healthy if nothing else. Also, most grades that have PE are younger and need a break from their work!

As everyone else has stated, the focus needs to come off of testing for just a little while and take a step back and look at our students as human beings! Getting rid of phyisical education is not only taking away a much needed break for our children, but it is also, in a way, promoting obesity and an unhealthy lifestyle. For some students, pe is the only phyisical activity that they take part in!!!

this will not be a very original post since everyone seems to agree that the removal of PE is a bad idea. I do find it very interesting, because childhood obesity is at an all time high, as well childhood hyperactivity. It seems like a little mildly controled physical activity could help both of these issues to some degree. when i tutored at hardin park it seemed like the kids always did better studying after a good game of wall ball had worn them out a little bit.

 Without out physical education as a part of schooling there are unavoidable consequences that law-makers either thought about and decided to let teachers and parents deal with, or they did not consider all possible consequences or the effects.

Obesity for example. Kids will eat more canned, processed cafeteria food and not work it off a couple times a week unless they are fortunate enough to be involved with extracirricular activities.

More restlessness in the classroom, and possibily more over diagnoses of ADHA.

I think lack of physical education promotes laziness, not a more productive acedemic atmosphere.

My stepdad is a PE teacher for K-5 and he is not happy with this at all. His is a big believer that children should have PE and recess, especially for K-5 students. I totally agree with him because child obesity is becoming a problem and if parents are going to do anything about than the only other place where they can get help in in the school system. It saddens me that there is so much emphasis on testing.
