OK girls, I'm looking back at Delpit and wondered if you had any thoughts to contribute. I think her "culture of power" is white, middle-class, but the way the question is worded makes me question that. :?: As for the rest of the question I remember our discussion about giving direct "orders" (typically a black habit) vs. asking for compliance (typically a white middle class habit). . . in fact I'm specifically recalling Jennifer saying "Get your rusty behind in the tub" :D I also have something in my notes about sterotypes - connected to not assuming you know someones story and putting them in a "box" before you give them a chance. The third piece that I think may be applicable here is the bit about dialects and not telling a child what they say is wrong just b/c it's their "home dialect" not their "school dialect."
I'm anxious to hear other thoughts on this!

Hey Amy. I was thinking about the same ideas that you were for this question. I think that Delpit considers white middle class the culture of power. Somewhere in the article it actually says it if I remember correctly. Also I think the examples that you gave are what she is looking for in terms of how our different cultures clash in a classroom environment. As a white middle class teacher, we have impose our culture with its values on our students whether we mean to or not. So I think that you are on the right track.
