OK girls, I'm looking back at Delpit and wondered if you had any thoughts to contribute. I think her "culture of power" is white, middle-class, but the way the question is worded makes me question that.
As for the rest of the question I remember our discussion about giving direct "orders" (typically a black habit) vs. asking for compliance (typically a white middle class habit). . . in fact I'm specifically recalling Jennifer saying "Get your rusty behind in the tub"
I also have something in my notes about sterotypes - connected to not assuming you know someones story and putting them in a "box" before you give them a chance. The third piece that I think may be applicable here is the bit about dialects and not telling a child what they say is wrong just b/c it's their "home dialect" not their "school dialect."
I'm anxious to hear other thoughts on this!
