I don't enjoy these types of books because they remind me of my desperate struggle to fill some sort of purpose so that I will not feel like I have wasted my life.
I had to respond to this because I know it is so important. Each of the characters in the novel are fulfilling a purpose as each brings his or her unique human struggle to the world.
I believe that it is the struggle itself that matters. We find meaning, lose faith, and find it again. But throughout it all, we choose. We can't live without making choices. I think it is the quality of these choices, and our willingness to choose again and again, each time choosing as best we are able, that reveals our purpose.
If each of us simply chose, as each small opportunity arises each day, to care justly and wholly for ourselves, our communities, and our world, we would not only live a life with deep purpose, we would also create a better world.
