The perception that you can only be hurt by others if you allow the person to hurt you,(emotionally),has been found in many modern resources. Do you think this perception applies in this story? Can it really apply to real life situations? Does this perception change the mind shift to forgiveness?

I think that you give off the perception that you aren't being hurt to others. Orleanna did a good job of playing the dutiful wife for many years, appearing to not be hurt by Nathan. Unfortunately we can't control our emotions as we can our outward reactions.

I used to hear that old addage "sticks and stones...but words will never hurt me." was so wrong, even as a child. It seemed to me so obvious that words could do a whole lotta hurtin'.

Ben,
I agree. You can pretend you are not hurt, but you always know the truth inside. In order for others not to be able to jurt you, you would have to be emotionless.
