As a music education major, this subject has been brought up in many of my music education classes. How do you all feel about standardized testing and the arts?
-Personally, I find it really difficult to set a limit to a child's capabilities in a predominately performing class such as music. Most things that a student could even be tested on in a standardized test would be brought up only within the confines of a private lesson setting that does not involve anywhere from twenty to two hundred other students. Other than the history and theory of fine arts, how can you test something that is purely humanistic?

I am not a music ed. major but I can appreciate what goes into music education as I spent seven years in middle school and high school playing my clarinet for the school in different bands. I played in concert, marching, and pep bands all throughout these seven years. I do not believe that there could ever be a complex standardized test for band even if someone were to try. Each performer has his or her own style and I question if that could be valued. Now in the case of whether or not a person was able to play their scales up and down I believe that to be a rudimentary lesson and could possibly be tested at some time. I also believe that should an enforceable test be created for standardizing the arts, it would not encourage the artist's creativity but that it would simply limit the artist. This is not to say that with every artistic reproduction things like an artist's statement would not be required.
