After the discussion we had in class last week I am still wondering how we fight as teachers fight the battle of parents "un-teaching" tolerance and other equality lessons that we try to teach our students? I think that it is very important to model equality and tolerance, but we all know that there are some parents who still live in the dark ages and are completely against our society today, so how do we keep our students from returning back to their ways??? Any ideas :?:

Once someone has grown up thinking a certain way is takes a great deal to get them to think differently. My grandmother still refers to African Americans as a word that I won't repeat. Now she has nothing against them, but the very connotation of using that word shows that even at her age some things never die.

I don't know if there really is anything we can do in order to change perspectives other than to model it in our classrooms and our lives. As teachers we will be role models. We ought to live up to it not just in class, but in our lives outside of the classroom. For instance, I don't want my students seeing me drunk in public because it would not lower my credibility for handling the substance, but it would showcase a behavior that I do not wish for them to repeat.

I agree with Travis in the fact that once people are raised a certain way and to believe certain things it is often difficult for them to change. As teachers, I think that we should show our disapproval of intolerance and promote a classroom and a world of equality.

One thing we can do is make sure that students learn and know that there are different things for different envioroments. The student should know that it is ok to think and believe certian things but in school we have conduct ourselves in certian ways. This should turn into a model of the real world
