I just read this article in a local newspaper from back home and was curious as to what you all thought about a state lottery? Should NC have one and do you think it will play a positive role in education?

I'm kinda on the fence here. On one hand, I'd really like to win the lottery. On the other, it can provide some false, well maybe not false, but unlikely hopes to people who really don't have the money to spend frivolously but will. Rich people don't need to win the lottery and generally aren't the ones buying tickets. Poor people are. So then again I'm in the debate with myself...on one hand, these people are adults and can decide for themselves. On the other hand, if you can keep people from hurting themselves even further would you? Or is it as bad as it has been made out to be? I just don't know.

I think that a state lottery would be a good idea, if the proceeds really do go to the state's education system. This is the only way, however, that I think it would be good. This money may turn out to benefit us as future teachers by giving our schools more money, and maybe even a pay raise. But, if the money is not given to the state's education system, then it wouldn't be as good an idea. As far as giving people false hope in "striking it big", people know their chances of winning, if they think they have a better chance than any other person, they are dumb. I heard the same argument in Cherokee when they were trying to get their Casino. "Oh it will take people's money and they will loose everything!" Well I'm sorry, but if they are dumb enough to spend their whole paycheck on gambling, they didn't deserve the money in the first damn place! I hear this kind of crap all the time back home and it still has no effect on me. Once again, if people are dumb enough to blow their whole paycheck, and they don't win, that’s what they get for being stupid!

I think that the state lottery would be a great idea. I feel that as of now people are taking their money to other states such as Virginia, Tennessee, and South Carolina and buying lottery tickets. I feel like North Carolina is missing out and that our economy is losing money to these other states.

We are currently the only state on the eastern coast that does not have a lottery. Every state surrounding us also has one. North Carolinians are currently spending their money in other states lotteries. North Carolina could be benefitting from this money, especially the education system. I think it is definitely a good idea. I am all for more money for the schools! In my opinion, the pros heavily outweigh the cons!

I agree with Heath on this one. I feel that a lottery is a good idea as long as the money goes toward education in North Carolina. They keep advertising it as an "educational lottery." If I find out that the money is not going to schools, then I would be really mad. Our educational system needs all the money and support it can get. The lottery has turned out to be really good for South Carolina schools. I think it would really help here.

I may be one of the few people on this board who actually oppose the lottery. Those who play the most, thereby those who stand to lose the most, are those who have the least to spend. I am talking about the poor. The money for education has to come from somewhere and the loss of money from these people would actually hurt those we are trying to help. Another example is Kansas. Two years before the state lottery was enacted Kansas had a nice stable economy. Two years after it was enacted, Kansas' economy was in the pits with the lottery as primary cause. People were going into so much debt that they were going bankrupt. I think that the lottery is a bad idea. On the surface, the benefits to education seem nice, but I do not want to hurt those that I believe the goals of education want me to help.

I am all for the lottery. My husband and I discussed this issue last week. He pointed out that it hurts impoverished families, but I agree with the above postings that it is their choice. I mean it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out the odds of actually winning a lottery. If you buy that argument, then we need to not tax cigarettes and alcohol because many impoversished people use both drugs. (Again, I would say tax them. Those are their choices). I am not trying to bash people without much income, but too much NC money goes to the SC, Viriginia and Tennessee lotteries anyway. I would much rather see this going into OUR school systems rather than others. My husband also mentioned that the money would probably never hit the schools. I disagree with that as well. If you look at Tennessee's recent implementation of the lottery, almost all of the money went back into their systems and they have been very successful with it. I mean, this proposition directly benefits our work environment, paycheck, supplies and facilities. I support any measure that benefits and improves the quality of education in this state - or any other. It is not my place to be the moral police and tell people what they can and can't do. I'll bet the people who argue against it would gladly accept the money if they happened to win....
