I was not surprised by Plato's discussion of "instruments of the State" being made for a purpose, "not to please themselves", but to "be his (the legislator) instruments in binding up the state", but as I thought about the it, I realized that the comment was made a bazillion years ago! Have things not changed in all this time? Are we as teachers still simply "instruments of the state?" Have we crossed that line? Are we free to see clearly in front of us, and to state explicitly what we truly see? Is all really as it seems???
