I really enjoyed our guest speaker today. I felt that he brought out very good points about the way America is dead set against the separation of church and state, but yet our money and pledge say the we are a nation under God. I also found the way that they separate the two in Germany, yet are able to teach religion in the classroom very interesting. Since we weren't able to talk in class i was just curious on everyone's recation and if you think our way is better or if you agree with the German way. Also, do you think their system would work out in America. :D

Laura I think that when we say that America has a seperation of church and state that it is a contradiction; because of the money and pledge issues you already addressed. My roommate also brought up a good point as well. Have you ever wondered why some businesses are closed on Sundays (corporations and such)?? We decided that this is b/c when the founders of our cutry started setting business practices they looked to the only laws that they had to help them figure out what to do. The laws that they had were the 10 Commandments; one commandment says "that we are to keep the Sabbath day holy". Basically, don't work on Sundays. So even today it seems that we haven't lost those Biblical roots. Help me out, am I way off?? :?:

I liked a lot of Dr. Muller said in his discussion on Tuesday as well. In response to your question, I agree with him that their system probably wouldn't work here in America. We do have a very diverse, religious society and I think that if anyone tried to make a switch now, there would be riots galore everywhere. People want their false sense of church and state separation because they don't want to be "oppressed" by other peoples' religious background/views. You could say that a lot of people in our country (America claims all of these freedoms and openness) are too closed-minded to make a system like Germany's work here.
