Because we did not have an opportunity to discuss the article in class as a whole I was wondering what everyone thought of it. With all of our current educational focus on understanding Learner Diversity and multiculturalism, is it still possible that we of a Dominant group still do not listen to the experiences of minorities. Are we still perpetuating the cycles of oppression by not providing to students the skills that they really require to be successful in life. Is it necessary to teach people to conform, or is it necessary for the larger society to be more understanding and tolerable of differences?

Lauren, You posed some deep questions! I think that it is important that we afford our students the ability to recognize and participate in "the dominant discourse" - therefore, in a sense, conforming. However, I believe, as I am sure you do that we must be willing to be tolerant of or understanding when referring to those who may not fit within the confines of the "Dominant discourse".
