Last week, my group discusses a program called Accelerated Reader. If you haven't heard of it, this a system of quizzing students on the books that they read. The little tests simply ask questions about details in the books. This goes along with our discussion on Tuesday about testing for the objective vs. testing for the subjective. Have any of you had any experience with Accelerated Reader? Do you have any ideas of how to modify or replace this program? Knowing the hair color and shoe size of the main character in a book is not going to get our students anywhere, and that is what we are asking them to know!

I must say that in my experience, the Accelerated Reader (or AR, as we called it) program was really pointless. I mean, it made some people read, but only because we got points and then prizes for it. Sometimes, you didn't even have to read the books and you could still get all the points on the idiotic tests, just by guessing or by having common sense. And, suddenly, without really accomplishing anything (and certainly not intrinsically), you have a pizza party? Really, this program is intended to get kids into reading- it does just the opposite- makes it something for students to do so that they will get a prize for it... Not effective teaching at all, in my mind.
