I believe the answer to this is yes. I watched a Dateline special about this the other day and the data was amazing. They presented girls and boys with a glass of lemonade that was "sweetened" with salt. All of the girls said that the lemonade was good and all of the boys spoke their minds and said that it was gross. Also they presented the children with presents of socks and pencils. When the girls opened the presents they responded, "Wow, just what I needed, thank you!" The boys all voiced their disappointment. The girls and boys were brought in individually as to not prompt their response based on others. When asked to describe themselves in one word- all of the girls said nice while all of the boys gave other answers and didn't use the word nice. They used smart, fun, indpendent etc. Hidden cameras were also put into the homes of the children and it was amazing how much the girls were taught to hide their feelings and be nice. (The word nice was actually used over and over again.) _"Be nice!" "That's not nice!" Boys were tolerated and prompted to act out their frustrations. I think that this is something very important that we should keep in mind as teachers. What do you think this kind of behavior shaping can do to children?
