Post subject:  helping those who came in behind catch up

I have been thinking a lot lately about how some kids cimsply come to school with so little prior knowledge and yet others come having been read to every night, having been able to play games and lean things through computer software, and just ebing more prepared for school. Some children simply don't have access to the resources at home, then come to school so far behind other students. I am wondering what your opinions are on how to help those children catch up and not get left behind from the very beginning. This goes along with classroom equality and everyone having the same access to resources. Please tell me what you think. Thanks!

I have learned alot of useful ways to take the different levels of children in the classroom and even the playing field. You will never be able to have the class on one level, you have to implement your resource teachers to help modify assignments and facilitate learning. I also believe that creating groups within the classroom help to create level playing filed amongst the children.

Post subject:  do what you can

In this situation, you just have to do the best you can. If there is a student that's behind you don't want to slow the rest of the class down by catching him or her up, but you don't want to move on to quickly for the student either. In order for everyone to be challenged you have to use your resources. If there are parents that want to come in and volunteer that would be excellent. You could get the parents to work one on one with the student or you could get them to manage a small group while you work with the student for a while. You could also go out of your way to modify the work that you assign this student. So they are working on things that are at an appropriate level for them.

I wish that all the students would be equal but you are right in saying that not all students have the same access. I really admire schools that do fund raisers to help by a lap top for every students. I feel that only way to help them catch up is to allow all students the same resources. I do not think it is fair that students fall through the cracks because of their socio-economic status!!

I definitely agree with Summer about having to do the best you possibly can. Because kids are always going to be at different levels it is very important to do assessments at the beginning of the year to see where your students are. I think it is ok to put students into groups based on level of ability but make sure that you dont label them....just simply put them into groups!!! I also think that it is neat to mix up the groups so that the higher ability students can teach those that are "behind". It is a benefit for both groups. I also agree with what Natalie said about using your resource teachers. Definitely get to know them and use them as much as you can. Thats what they are there for.
