Hey ya'll! This is kind of a silly question, but what you guys remember about kindergarten? The things I experienced in kindergarten are so different compared to what kinds are experiencing today. For example, did you know that there is no more nap time after Christmas during your kindergarten year? I remember taking naps during the school day up to second grade. Also, we used to have a "celebration"/party for every holiday, but now, they are only allowed two parties/celebrations during a school year. They also do not stay outside as long as we do. I remember kindergarten as fun and a year to grow not only academically, but also socially. I know of kindergartners who already hate school.

So my question is what do you all think about how much the elementary grades have changed since you were in elementary school? Do you think the change is for the better or worse?

My experience is that these things vary hugely from school to school and county to county, even teacher to teacher. I know plenty of K classes that still nap after Christmas. I do know schools have cut down on the number of parties, which may be a good thing considering how much candy is given out at most of them. You will see a real range from K classes where everyone sits at desks, and some where the kids don't have any assigned seats. I was surprised a year ago at Blowing Rock that the K kids sit in a circle on a rug to do most of their work, and pull a piece of stiff cardboard out from under the rug when they need a surface to put paper on to draw or write. This school has two classes in one room. Some are a lot more oriented toward age appropriate activity levels while others really expect the kids to be still and LEARN.
