It seems that there is a growing trend of parents who do too much for their children. Although this may not seem like a huge issue initially, once the child has entered the school system, the problem becomes that of the institution. Unfortunately, once the trend has started, parents do not easily change, even through high school and into college.

Currently in colleges all over the world, students are coming to college completely dependent on their parents. Students are not prepared to take on the responsibiilty of being on their own, which is a minor requirement of college. Parents are filling out pre-college paperwork and often taking on the coursework of their children as well. The end result is that students are graduating from colleges only because of the hard work of their parents. We are granting degrees to people who are not fully prepared at all for the "real world".

What are some things that we as educators can do to change this cycle? Although we will not be directly responsible for this problem, we will most likely be blamed. What are some things that we can do to assist parents in the process of letting go of their children earlier and helping to create more independent students?
