After our discussion on the infant mortality rate I did a little research and came up with these thoughts. First I think that the data is fairly reliable, almost every state has a division that keep up with vital stats. Second I had a hard time initally to understand how a country such as ours with so many advances have such a higher mortality rate, it just did not make sence, but then I started thinking about my job and making referals to specialist or trying to get a child scheduled for a MRI or something. I encounter kids with little or no healthcare coverage and most places will not even give the child a patient unless they pay in full before they are even seen. Most of the time the parents can not afford this so therefore the child does not get to partake of the limitless technological advances that could diagnose potential life threatening or debilitating problems. So in short the lack of socialized medicine where everyone is entitled to the same care. Third, lack of education regarding prevenative healthcare such as prenatal care, asthma control, diabetes control and so on. And lastly, smoking and drinking alcohol while pregnant and all of the many problems that they cause. All of these and more I believe are at the heart of the mortality rate.
