I was wondering how everyone felt about the reservations that Indians live on. Yes, there is the strereotype about them being drunk, lazy and having casinos. But Indians reservations and the camps the U.S. had for the Japenese after Pearl Harbor are somewhat similiar. Meaning that both races were boxed up to be kept seperate. The Indians were here first and fought as long as they could to keep their land until they were decimated. After that alot of them were forced to cut their hair and become Catholic (there are plenty of pictures that prove that.)

I go to Cherokee and play fast-pitch softball every other month. The Cherokee do not have a slow pitch league. They have six fast-pitch teams. I also like to visit the casino between games. They do not allow alcohol on the fields, so I have not seen any drunk Native Americans yet.

We have a tournament this Saturday here in morganton and most of the Cherokee teams will come.
Our next tournament in Cherokee is July 15th, 16th, and 17th. Our team is the Burke Explosion.

Very sad.....I spent the summer of '91 on the Navaho reservation. It did have a high number of drug problems. Also, my brother -in-law is a school counselor on the Flathead Indian reservation in Montana. He says there is a huge drug problem there too. I feel the Native Americans spirits have been so broken over the course of several hundred years due to there encounter with the "white man". Their whole view of the world and life is so different from that of the white protestant culture. As they have been exsposed and transformed by these encounters, they have become more fragmented. They have lost so much of their culture and heritage and they feel still so far away from the the white culture. Thus they begin to fill the void.

My cousin has a doctorate degree in psychology and practices Native American beliefs (mainly Lakota.) He has worked in Native American schools and a prison with a dominate Indian population and he had to leave it. He now teaches. He said it was so depressing to see the Native Americans is such awful situations.

Many years back I watched a documentary on the living conditions on some of these reservations in the mid west and I remember thinking why do they stay. I now think that I understand better why they stay. They have been looked down on and persecuted for years. Although they live in poverty at least they are safe and are with others who understand what they feel. I do not buy into the idea that all Indians are drunks, but if they were I think that we (the white people) have drove them to it.

Hey guys,
I think it takes alot of courgage for people to break out of their molds. Historically, Native Americans were forced to live on reservations. Generation after generation has lived there and now believe it is there home (even though there may be more opportunity outside the reservation). Furthermore, it may be harder for them to leave because they would also leave their families and friends. One of you said they may stay because they don't have to endure racism on the reservation, I agree with you.
