Post subject:  Tribal Rights

I just watched in the news about an Indian tribe that has just filed suit with the state of New York and the government of the US. This tribe (Shinnetock-sp?) has about 1300 members and is trying to get their tribal status recognized by the goverment. Alot of their ancestors lived and died where residents of Long Island now reside. The govenor of New York said that he feels that the current residents should not have to move anywhere. The Indians want around 13 million dollars that they feel is due to them after their land was stolen from them. Do you think they should get the money and the land or not anything at all. Remember that the community in question is high class and worth millions and millions of dollars.

I also believe that if they can prove their land was stolen and they lived in that area that they should receive the money due to them. The residents who live there now had nothing to do with what happened in the past, but the government should pay so the tribe can have their own society now.

I feel like if the land was wrongfully taken from them retrubition should be paid. However, a person cannot make two wrongs a right. Their are people living on the land know that have more than likely worked hard for what they have and it should not be taken away either. If the history of the land was traced and their tribe is in the right then they should be recognized for that whether it be with money or other unoccupied property.

Post subject:  Lumbee

The Lumbee Indians in North Carolina were having a hard time. the state would not recognize them because they were a mixture of several other tribes. I'm not sure if or how it ended. Many tribes are going back to history books and through historical documents and finding treaties that have been broken. They are filing suits to recover land and money.

:? That is a very tough question. So many sides to consider. First, I agree the people living there now had nothing to do with the indians loosing their land and should not be punished. Second, I do feel that once one or two generations have passed that what responsibility do we have towards retribution? Third, I do see how the indian tribe has suffered and would it not be better to give them some land in a national park and use a good portion of the money to build their people up such as schools and good communities...this could be done through a joint effort of indian leaders and the ones dishing out the money. I do not see any effect casinos have on bettering the indian race. I just don't know...but I do feel education and dignity and respect will be the path to take...not simply cash.

I agree with you Mary i do believe that education is a great way to go with the Indians not only just giving them cash because without education it would be hard to know how to make the most of the money that is given instead of wasting it on things that will not last.

I believe the tribe should be paid retribution and offered assistance in setting up a reservation without kicking people out of their homes. I also agree with Mary that education is very important. It would great to see the govt. pay to help set up schools, hospitals or whatever on the reservation and offer training in these areas.
