While I appreciated the opportunity to read The Big Test, I must admit that I have enjoyed this week's reading more. Hope in the Unseen held my attention until the very end, making me want to know, "Where is Cedric now??"
Also, I read an article this week discussing gender bias in the SAT, ACT, and various other graduate school admissions exams. The article stated these university admissions tests under predict females' abilities, "The SAT is designed soledly to predict students' first year college grades. Yet, despite the fact that females earn higher grades throughout both high school and college, they consistently receive lower scores on the exam than do their male counterparts." The article went on to describe biased test questions, multiple-choice format, the guessing penalty, and the "speeded" nature of the test as reasons for the gender gap. Any comments from those of you that have taught high school or have any information on this apparent bias or has the Educational Testing Service corrected this gender gap?
