After our discussion about classroom diversity, or a lack of, in honor or AIG classes, I visitied our top classses and took a look at the make-up of those students.
Our middle school has the following statistics: White 59.4%, African Am. 18.5%, Hispanic 11.3%, Asian 8.5%, and American Indian .3%.
Our 6th grade AIG population is split into two classes and has 5 Hispanic, 2 Indian, 1 Asian, and 3 black students. There are 24 girls and 17 boys.
After doing the math, Hispanic population equals 12 %, American Indian is 4.8%, Asian students equal 2.4%, blacks equal 7.3%, and whites equal 73%. To have an equal representation of the diversity in our school to show up in our classes, we need more Asian and black students in these classes. However, I think these statistics are encouraging and are moving in the right direction.
