Different dialect or different language

I have the admit that for me, this is a new way to think about language. I really assumed that if you were not speaking formal English, you weren't speaking english correctly. I really appreciate the ideas introduced in class last night. I think that respect for all dialects is very important, with respect it will probably be easier to teach formal english. I am curious if those who are teaching or have taught, have had expereince teaching formal english as a new language.
