Post subject:  Is Nathan justified in his actions?

I was just wondering what everyone is thinking about Nathan, the father in The Poisonwood Bible. He's righteous, chauvinistic, and arrogant and he seems to make some foolish decisions regarding his family's welfare that could be construed as reckless. Due to his obvious dedication to his faith, do you think that Nathan's position as a minister justifies his actions? Is it fair for him to put the lives of his wife and children in jeopardy in order to better serve his God?

Absolutely NOT. I am a religious person but I would never jepordize my family the way Nathan does. I get so mad when I read that book. I think he is off in another world. How can he think that GOD would want him to basically destroy his family. I am not done with the book and look forward to reading the end. I keep yelling at the wife to get the hell out.

I do not find Nathan's actions justified if his aim is to disrespect and dismiss the history, culture and its people completely. As a minister, he should be making connections with those around him. Where is the love? Instead, Nathan is detached; he is detached from the physical surroundings, the people of the Congo and from his own family. I am sure we have all come across people in leadership positions that we perceived to be like Nathan--even if it is only our perceptions.

I agree. I am still wondering if I am going to find an understanding in Nathan's actions, but I haven't yet. He has started this mission with certain goal and plans and he hasn't stopped to evaluate where he is and what he should be doing. It's like he is storming full-speed ahead with his eyes closed.
