Throughout the beginning of the novel, I was wondering how Orleanna puts up with the way Nathan is treating her. I guess I am from a different generation and a different frame of mind, but how can Nathan reach out to others and leave his family in the shadows? Does anyone else feel this way?

You make a great comment with "how can Nathan reach out to others and leave his family in the shadows." I think the answer is that he can't. Without a doubt, this is Nathan's biggest issue and problem. He doesn't love his wife the way he should, and by should I am talking about how the same Bible he preachs says he should. His attitude towards her is awful. He is a good representive of a bad husband. Maybe husbands and wifes having this type of relationship was common back in the day, but that does not make it right even back then!
