As I read our class assignment, Savage Inequalities.....I feel as though this couldn't possibly have taken place in the United States. What has happened to oppress children and their whole community is just appalling. The message that this book conveys is startling to me. I grew up in rural Southern Maryland where outhouses and coal burning stoves were abundant back in the seventies but that poverty can't compare to the injustices that took place in St. Lois.

I agree. I realize I have never really known what poverty is. The conditions these kids live in and experience at school are heartbreaking!

I agree also. There are sooo many things that we take for granted, and to make matters worst, these were CHILDREN! It made me feel like I have not been through half of the the things that they have!

I didn't realize that this portion of America was around. I can't imagine living in an area where so few children make it out. I do not know how to begin to address the situation though.
