In reading Savage Inequalities, I found myself feeling ashamed of the ways I have measured the success of my years in the teaching profession. On page 28, a teacher in East St. Louis talks about how proud he is that two of his students in 23 years, have gone on to MIT. Truly, his career is marked by the toiling of love for the children with whom he identifies. Thank God he was there for these two students, and for countless others who may not have gone to MIT, but might have left school at least some days, thinking how much better the world might be with teachers like this one standing watch.

That was a nice thought that I had missed. He truly focused on the positive. That was a highlight of teaching high school. I loved hearing about the scholarships that my children received. That is the one thing I miss since I've joined the ranks of middle school education.
