Powerful memories from Ms. La Verne. As I was reading the 1976 Spirit that you had to muster I am reminded of what an essential task it is for the teacher and administrator to pick-up on the child that is not fitting in. Often times I think the child who experiences near misses and misses from the system is going to become one of the major contributors to society. It will only take them being turned onto their potential. Just as you articulated, they know what it is like. As they forgive others, maybe they could forgive themselves for some of the more fixed beliefs they have held about themselves. Beliefs that were forged from unkind experiences and fixed at to young of an age.
