The one word that kept coming to my mind throughout the reading of this book was "guilt". The was a major theme for me throughout the book because a good part of this book had to do with how the characters responded to the guilt that they had from past situations and decisions. Guilt makes us act in ways that are uncommon to how we really would like to be seen as people. This was especially the case with the father.

I agree that guilt was prevalent in this book. The mother starts out by telling how she also has robbed Africa, and by telling her story, she hopes to gain some type of absolution.

I agree with the guilt issues. The mother is guilty about what has happened to her daughters and also about her relationship with Nathan. They all are ashamed of his actions as they get older and can understand more.

I think one of the lessons of the book was how different people deal with guilt and the effect it has on your life.

It is Nathan who was racked with guilt. All of the other character's guilt issues stemmed from his.
