Within the "Poisonwood Bible" There is some degree of humor about the ridiculous choices that the family made in what they took with them. Back in the opening sections, when they were faced with overweight violations, they layered themselves with item of clothing and "the might be handies" of such a journey. Turns out that in the Congo their choices became absurd artifacts of a life they had in the past.
This morning I am cleaning and once again trying to organize my personal office at home. NOT A PRETTY SIGHT (SITE). But the chore is also one of questioning if this or that would be a reasonable artifact? Should this go into the portfolio? Is this item representative of a worthy reflection? What do we drag thru our lifetimes that we are willing to attach to our professional voice?
What will you take?

I think the family took articles representative of the valuse of the society from which they came (cake mixes for celebrations, clothes to present proper appearances, etc.). It is interesting to see the discovery process the family members go through in reassessing their values, against the more rudimentary values of the Congolese. Perhaps we are not as civilized as we suppose ourselves to be. Same with artifacts, what is important in the big picture, versus what makes us look good in the short term.

It was interesting to see how they really couldn't use any of the things they wanted to bring so badly. However, the people really did like Rachael's looking glass (mirror). They had never seen one and so they thought that was very neat, and of course it would be interesting to be able to see yourself cleary for the first time-imagine!
