I think I am as intrigued by the family dynamics in the Poisonwood Bible as by the fact that the family traveled around the world to "enlighten the heathen." Their experiences in the jungle only amplifiy disfunctions and confusions already present in their own family. It make me wonder if in a normal day, we are so caught up in survival according to our way of life, that we accept disfunction as "part of the package". What do you think we might discover if we trekked our family halfway around the world and had to plant food for survival and live in a hut?

I think that would be very interesting....we probably would end up like they did at the end-all separated. Ha! I also thought it was neat to see how the girls took over in times that they needed, like when their mother was sick. The family really did adjust as needed to all teh different problems they faced in Africa.

Like I stated when I posted as the guest, I would starve.

I think that we all possess an inner strength that we might not know we have until we are called on to use it. When I had my second open heart surgery, I saw how worried and anguished my family looked. I was worried inside but this inner strength gave me the courage to get through it with a positive attitude and high spirits. I know that my surgery can't compare with what this family went through but my point is...when things get tough, the tough get going!
