In reading what I have read so far, Nathan seems self righteous, and disconnected with the culture of the Congo. Where is God's love for people in Nathan's actions? As a minister, he seems blinded by his own mission, goals, and plans. Neither does he seem to consider his wife and family in this picture. Do you think he should put them in jeopardy the way that he does?

He does seem to be blind to the fact that his family is falling apart!

I think that is a big theme in the story-Nathan is so worried about baptizing the people of the Congo, but yet he doesn't even seem to care about his own children. I understand his motives when he moved out there, but when the other missionaries advised him to go home and he didn't, I thought he was putting his family's safety in jeopardy. It was almost like he wasn't capable of feeling happy and loving his family the way he should.

I think God gets blamed for many things contrived by man for man's benefits. Nathan was on an ego trip, and in his own way, was like an alcoholic needing the "spirit" to keep him going day to day. I think he was afraid of finding out who he was without speaking with the voice of God.
