As we have discussed in class, teachers and administrators really need to stay attuned to all of the social pressures our students face. When Gayle talked about the young student she taught who was turned away from the dance, it was heartbreaking. Gayle could see the promise in this student. With all of the pressures we face in our jobs, how do we recruit new teachers who can and will be sensitive and in tune to their student's needs in such a way that they feel valued? New teachers have a lot on their plates but we cannot let them lose sight of the most important vision...the kids.

I like the idea I have heard of making teachers ride the bus so that they can see where their children live, to see where they come from, etc. I think this would put things into perspective for new teachers.
