We met a young African man through our church who truly exemplifies culture shock: modern day countryside Africa versus American city life. Ishmael made a profession of faith at the age of 12 in the village where he lived in Kenya (through the work of North American missionaries). He was disowned by his family and had to flee to the woods for safety, for his uncle put out a death decree for him. He traveled about the countryside until he connected with other missionaries who took him to a city in Kenya. He stayed there for two years, learning English and working with missionaries from the US. He came to America four years ago with the Southern Baptist group of missionaries who returned to Hendersonville, NC. There, Ishmael enrolled in seminary and began to study more about English and Bible history. A minister and teacher at Fruitland contacted folks at a Christian college in Texas, and the college granted Ishmael a scholarship to receive a master's degree in divinity studies. He is in Texas, and sent word to our church that we should pray for him, since he is having a difficult time with Greek. He says the people in Houston are not as friendly as the people in Hendersonville and Elkin, and he wants us to pray for them as well. Talk about cultural transitions!
