One quote really stood out to me in the "Class divided" video, and that is when the teacher said that many people felt this exercise was important and should be done, but in actuality we should be "wiping out the necessity for this exercise". It made me realize that when I was first watching the video I was really thinking about how great that was and it seemed like an extremely important lesson that all students and teachers should be exposed to, but at the same time, its extremely sad that something like that is so necessary. Wondering if anyone else caught on to this same idea??

To be honest I do not really know if I agreed with this lesson plan. Obviously it worked in an all white classroom. My high school for example, has a high amount of under respected and under appreciated races (Black, Indian, Mexican) that may not take to well to this lesson plan. At my school I hated the month of February, Why? Because of the black assemble that we were all made to go to. In my experiences when you give black people a sense of inferiority, it causes a not so pleasurable experience to all others. (Like I am sure vise-versa) I have walked out of black assemblies before and to me I refuse to be a part of any activity that puts one race or group of people over another.

Yeah, I remember hearing the teacher say that and thinking about it for a while. I thought that it was great for that teacher to do such a controversial activity; but I thought she was even more right in pointing out that there shouldn't even be a need for this activity. I was just really moved by that teachers dedication to her students. I thought it was really cool to see the students come back, and still remember the activity.

I thought she did an awesome job with that activity. It was interesting to me as I watched it, the TIME PERIOD. This seemd to be just after the Civil Rights activities (well not DIRECTLY after, but soon after. When was this movie, late 60's, early 70's?). That's still a pretty recent time to be presenting a topic like this, in the time period, and location. I think she was actually a little ahead of her time with this activity. I can't believe, this, a white woman, was taking the initiative to bring to her students, at such a young age, the issue that is presented. I thought it was actually kind of astonishing to see her take on this task. She could have received lots of animosity from parents, but she didn't. SO, apparantly, it worked! Which is a good thing.

Yes I caught onto her saying that also. It would be nice to not have to worry about the exercise at all. I kept thinking about the other differences in people and the prejudices or biases that people have other than the race topic. For instance, that class was entirely white but there were plenty of differences among the kids. Not all of the kids were "picture perfect"... there was a few who were overweight, had crooked teeth, or had glasses. We all know how cruel kids (or adults) are towards eachother for reasons much less significant than race. Until we wipe out all prejudices there will always be a need for that exercise.
