I just wanted to see what everyone else thought about this book. I for one went into it thinking that it was going to be total crap. I was actually mildly impressed by the end of the read, and I think there are a couple interesting points about Cedric's life that helped to make him succed were almost everyone from his high school couldn't: Personal determination Massive support from his mother Mentors throughout school Affirmative Action (I'll talk about this more in class I'm sure) Luck/God's Will? I think this was a pretty good book. It's still a pretty standard story about how african americans get screwed by our society, but the way that the writer catalogues the characters makes for a more believable and connecting story. |
