IDEA 2004, which is the new revised special ed. law added that parents can disagree with a child's Individualized Education Plan and if need be, take the case to court so that the child can recieve the best education. This addition was put into place so that parents have rights about the education of their child.
An IEP is a tool to help the team that is working with the child, (special ed teacher, principal, general ed teacher, parents, other specialists) devise the best education plan specific to the child. An IEP has certain goals and is a statement of the special services a child will be receiving. An IEP is created by a team of professionals, and is made so that the child is being taught skills they need to succeed.
I think that giving parents the right to disagree with the school system is a good thing. It keeps the school system in check, and insures that each child is receiving their right to a free and appropriate education.

Parents do have a lot of say in special education. Each year an IEP is devised, it will consists of the spe.ed. teacher, general ed. teacher, counselor, psychologist, paraprofessionals, the student, the students parents, community members, and whoever else is fit to sit in on the meeting. During this meeting each person has a chance to give input into what the child recieves educationally, the parents play a key part. However, some parents chose not to attend these meetings. I do think that parents have all the right to disagree with the education their child recieves, I am glad this law is in place. I do not think that it is fair for you to attack special eduation teachers based on one article, additionally if you think that all speical education teachers teach is how to sew and cook you are very misinformed.

This semester we spent a lot of time talking about diversity and how it will effect the community of our class. As educators we need to know about individual children and the social and cultural context in which they live. Whether they are children in special education or not parents should always be recognized as partners in education. I feel it is an injustice that we need to have a separate category such as special education. Inclusion for many is the ideal of best practice however, I feel it still segregates because those children are singled out and labeled. They are no different than any other child, everyone has special needs in some way, and all teachers should be able to teach all children. Instead, many educators tend to select who they want to teach and pass the challenges on to someone else. Yes, it is sad that parents need laws to ensure their children receive an equal education, but if they don't advocate for them who will.
