I was expecting something to happen to Barbara. I expected that she might become so depressed or disillusioned that she commit suicide. I suppose it was her faith in the long run that prevented this from happening. Did anyone else think this might happen as you were reading the book?

Bendy,
I had the same feeling as you had. Barbara is a character I think we can identify with. I know I have known more than a few Barbara's in my life. I really feel for her and people such as herself trying to make it in this materialistic world. She was not a dead beat by no means...she worked to pay her bills (usually) and support her son. But like a lot of people, she sees things that others have and starts reasoning with herself, "Well why not, I think I will buy myself these shoes...I deserve them...I've worked hard..." So many people in our nation are in this position-the working poor. They work, but still they are poor, and will probably always remain this way. What a depressing reality that must be to wake up to everyday!

I also wondered why Barbara didn't just give up. Her life seemed to be built around her son. I guess she new he needed her there. With little or nothing to provide to Cedric, she still did the best she could. I am amazed by her faith. Although, I think her faith was taken advantage of by the church she attended. Nevertheless, we all need to feel as though we are needed in some kind of respect.

I think that Barbara was the backbone behind Cedric. Although she had two other older children, it was obvious that her life revolved around Cedric. With both of them having a strong faith in God, I believe they both succeeded in overcoming obstacles that other people would be knocked down by.

Don't we hope we can all be this strong for our own biological children and our students. It bothered me how unconcerned the teachers were in this book. Cedric only had a few in high school that he could trust and confide in.
