I am somewhat confused by the inner drive Cedric had throughout the book. I think it is unusual for someone to try to pull themselves out of the hole. Nevertheless, we always see those who still manage to make something of themselves no matter what the circumstances are. How do we, as teachers, help to instill this inner drive into our students?

Julie, I think it has to come within a person, just like Cedric. To be able to overcome the many obstacles that he had to face, like his father's past, his social status, and the struggles that he and his mother faced. I wonder if he would have succeeded if he had not had the support system of his mother. We both have said that the students are not the problem, but the parents could do better. I think you have to have a support system. Penny

Penny, I completely agree that a child must have a support system in order to stick with something and learn perseverance. My example is a student in my class who struggled with reading at the beginning of the year. She did not do very well on the EOG pretest in Reading. This child didn't let this stop her, but she has a very solid support system at home. I am happy to say that this child is one on my top readers now, and it is because of her perseverance. I think this is due to the fact that she has had to work so hard to get her reading where it needs to be. I am just so proud of her! She has grown in leaps and bounds!
