Ladies,
As you read the Delpit article, did it remind you of the code switching we discussed earlier in class? After reading the article, I hope to speak with my students about why we are expected to write and speak in certain ways when we are in society.

Julie, I agree with you completely. Before reading this article, I read a traditional Jack Tale to my group during read aloud. It was written in mountain dialect, and when I was finished with the story, I asked the students what they noticed. They told me that the story "sounds like we talk". We then discussed why the book was written as it was, and why we do not normally write books, stories, or letters that way. It turned out to be an interesting discussion for all of us. The kids eventually came up with the conclusion that we can talk to our friends using "Jack Tale" language, but we have to use our best English when writing and speaking in other situations.
