There has been a new program started in Wilkes called the Samaritan Back Pack. It is only happening in two schools, but they are hoping to expand it to them all. What it is, is five back packs filled with food will be given to five students in the school whom the guidance counselor deems needs it the most. The back packs go home on friday and the empty back packs come back to school on Monday. The guidance counselor picks five student whom she feels may not have a lot of food at home, so that they may be able to have some food for the weekend. Hunger is a real problem here. Their are kids who only get to eat a real meal when they are at school. It is in every school in every county in every state. I seen it in Burke County where my block I class was doing practicum. I have seen it a couple times here in Wilkes. What will you do if you suspect that one of your students is going hungry when they are home? This is something that has really touched my heart.

Misty, this seems like a great idea. I would like to see it expanded to more than 5 children in an entire school but it's a great start. If I were to see one of my students hungry, I would have to give them something to eat because my heart would just go out to them. Then I would try to figure out a way to help that family out with food whether it be by using a system like this or calling some local support system - if it were a bad case, I seem to think I would provide a little myself, if I could.
