"There are two types of laws: just and unjust. I would be the first to advocate obeying just laws. One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. I would agree with St. Augustine that "an unjust law is no law at all." -MLK Jr.

Are there any laws that you disagree with? The Patriot Act comes to mind. . .

There are many ridiculous laws that are on the books that are not nessecarily enforced. For example, in Wisconsin, there is a law that you cannot eat a piece of apple pie without a piece of cheese on top. Obviously laws like this are stupid and should be either ignored (as they are) or removed. But some laws, like the one we discussed in class about the different amounts of powder cocaine and crack cocaine, I do not agree with. I also do not agree with mandatory minimum sentances. I think we need to take a long hard look at our laws and make some changes to avoid racial or class institutional discrimination.

There are 'just' and 'unjust' laws. The only problem is that moral values might differ between people. I do think mandatory minimums are unfair, but I know there a lot of people who believe in the mandatory minimum sentencing. Unfortunately, many of these people will never really experience what it is like to face a mandatory minimum jail sentence.

I was really suprised when we discussed the laws in class about crack cocaine versus powder cocaine. I think this makes our judicial system seem very unjust. How is it fair that the rich get off easier when concerning drugs? I was also supsrised when Gayle told us that there is no one population where drug use exists. Drugs are used across all races, all classes, etc. I think that everyone should get the same punishment for using them.
